Day 5 - Grandby to Estes Park

Yesterday was a time trial of sorts. We had to meet certain cut-off times at each aid station or they would not let you proceed. We rode our bikes all the way through Rocky Mountain National Park. It was very beautiful. We saw a heard of Elk up on a ridge at 12,000 feet. So much pine beetle damage. We have seen lots of that over the last few days. It was 37 miles to the top. Al said we would all most likely ever ride our bikes at a higher elevation again. (12,500 feet) You could see the smoke from the fires when you were up top. It was very steep coming down 2,000 bikers, cars, ambulances, all on super tight roads with the wind blowing and huge drop offs on each side. I started to get panicky and then I started to cry so I waived down the SAG and rode into town. I know I was scared if I got in the "meat wagon." Al and Bill saw my bike on top. I told you they are always looking out for me. Al chased down the van and waved to me through the window to make sure I was ok. I was so glad they saw me because I really did not want them to wait and worry. We all met up in Estes Park and had a beer with James and Camille. They rode to the top from Estes to meet us but it was so chaotic up there we never saw them. We spent the rest of the day at the Stanley laughing and laughing and being inappropriate as we usually are when we get together. We went to town and met Bill's friend Fat Head. He just left Sweetwater to work at Avery Brewery out here. Good Times.

Three Husbands Now (Al, James, Bill)

Today Day 6! One and Done!

Bill and I are taking it to Ft. Collins ( they have modified the route due to fire but we are ending up at the brewery). 55 miles a few beers and then to Atlanta. We don't get in until very late. Ready for some Mocha time and to catch up with all of you. Thanks for following us on our journey. We have had a great time. What an adventure!

Day 3 and 4

I am sorry I have left you hanging. We get up at 5 and are on our bikes at 7ish. Last night we did not get to our condo until 8 and we could not speak much less blog! We made it easily from Carbondale to Aspen. We swung by the Red Brick and gave Susanne a hug. Then we started our climb towards Independence Pass. We all made it! I even beat Bill....but his saddle broke and he had to have it fixed which took an hour. But that still counts right?  Al took off before us so he could spend two days with his family.
Bill and I made it to Twin Lakes and I could not function. I went partially blind and my hands did not work. They still don't so typing and getting dressed are tough! Holding the handle bars 10 hours a day has made them not want to straighten out. We have been calling them monkey claws. Anyway I was line adverse yesterday. On RTR you have to wait in line for Water, Gatorade, bathroom, food, pictures at certain spots. I was just not into the lines yesterday and so I did not eat enough. So I paid for it. That last 20 miles from Twin Lakes to Leadville was Twilight Zone material. All Bill and I could do was feed ourselves and fall into bed.

Had to wait in line to get this picture but it sure was worth it!

This is the amazing man that willed me to Leadville.

This morning we were hurting and I seriously did not think I could accomplish 95 miles and two passes today but we DID IT!!! I ate all day long, said some serious prayers and had a fabulous day.

These are my two favorite people in the world Bill and the Flippin" Flapjacks man. We eat 4 pancakes and two sausages at the first or second aid station each day. This is after a full breakfast. I ate about 10 full meals today but it worked!

We even hung out in the park in Granby and ate some more and had a beer or two before we bussed to Winter Park. Tomorrow we ride 60 to Estes Park. Bill has just told me we are staying in the Stanley Hotel where they filmed the Shining. Do you thing they rent tricycles to ride up and down the halls at the front desk? I thing the last day route will have to be changed due to the fires near Ft. Collins. Word on the street is that they will route us to Boulder instead. I am sad to miss the O'dell's brewery in Fort Collins which really was the ONLY reason I was riding my bike 450 miles but I guess they have beer in Boulder too. Our friends James and Camille will be joining us tomorrow at the top of the pass. Should be another beautiful day in the Rockies.

This is us on top of Ute Pass. That is the Gore range behind us. We also did Freemont Pass today.

Much love and good night!

Hi Folks,

Bill Here.  The Williams Fork Mountains are awesome.  I saw a few ranchers separating calves from their mama's. It is such beautiful country with wide open vistas. I have read about this area in Colorado literature and I was pleased to finally see it event if it was from a 15 miles stretch of gravel road on a road bike. This is a hard thing to manage! Talk to you later, Bill

This is Wendy again. I had the most amazing dream last night. I dreamed I was holding a baby chimpanzee. This has always been a dream of mine. That chimp loved me and I loved him. Just so you know he was potty trained and could say a few words. Then some one gave me a live chicken in a gift bag. If anyone knows how I can hold a baby chimp let me know!

Today is the Day

I got to tell you traveling with two husbands is not bad! The boys have been so sweet to me. One gets me food the other gets me liquids and we are good to go. We had a great day yesterday. Tough climb at the end. The single file line of cyclist grinding it out to the top was pretty amazing. I passed a man yesterday on a tandem with his mentally challenged son. I asked him how he was and he said " Wonderful but we will better soon."
We did it!

Here are the boys (husband 1 and 2) 6 miles before the summit.
That is why they are still smiling.

Excited and nervous for today. Carbondale to Leadville. 82 Miles. Independence Pass! Bring it!

For the Atlanta folks.... Al and his wife, Dyanna, also have triplets. Three years old. They are beautiful! Here is a pick we took of his family before we started.

Day Two -- Bring it on!

What a great ride yesterday. We passed the Black Canyon. Rode over Blue Mesa Dam and through some beautiful farmland. In the beginning it was a great day for sailing not biking. A huge amount of wind was blowing us all over the rode. Once we started climbing it stopped for the most part.

Here we are at the start. (Nice finger -- upper left!)

Today we are going from Hotchkiss to Carbondale. The goal for the day is to make it to my massage on time at 3:30. We are staying in Glenwood so we are excited for the hot springs and dinner with Ric and maybe Su and the boys. McLure pass here we come!

Me at the Black Canyon.

Day One Here We Come!

So it is 6am and 41 degrees here in Gunnison, Colorado. We are packed up and ready to head to the opening ceremony! Registration yesterday was wild with so many people and all so fit! There are people here from all over. I overheard some great advice from two older gentlemen. They were mapping out their ride by the days not to be hungover. There are two upcoming days that are 50 plus miles uphill and they are not going to be hungover on those days. Sounds like a good plan to me.

My goal for today is to learn to ride with lots of people at once. Bill what is your goal today: "I don't know...just get over the top."

Bill and Al "hydrating" yesterday listening to the band.

Today we will ride 80 miles to Hothckiss a big organic farming town!

Lot's of love and ride like the wind.

Tomorrow is the Day!

Bill and I are leaving tomorrow morning (really early!) to fly to Denver for Ride the Rockies 2012.
We have been planning and preparing for our big ride for quite some time. Our children are safely ensconced at their camps and we are ready to roll. Bill's best friend from Salisbury that now lives in Golden, Co. will be riding with us. Al and Bill have done RTR many times and they are kind enough to allow me to tag along. I will try to post pictures and stories daily. Send us prayers for safety and good thoughts. Much love, Wendy and Bill.
